The Henley College is celebrating the appointment of its Chair of Governors, Mike Ashton, as a National Leader of Governance, recognising his expertise and contribution to leadership and governance within the further education sector.
The appointment was announced by the Further Education Commissioner in the Department for Education’s autumn newsletter, published on 6th October 2026.
As a National Leader of Governance, Mike joins a team of experienced education leaders who provide expertise and support to colleges across England, helping to strengthen governance, leadership and continuous improvement throughout the further education sector.
His appointment is a significant professional achievement and reflects the important role that effective governance plays in ensuring colleges deliver high quality education, develop the skills needed by employers and provide opportunities for young people to fulfil their potential.
At The Henley College, this commitment is reflected in an educational approach that combines academic excellence with technical and vocational skills, personal development and individualised student support.
Serving students from across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and the wider Thames Valley, the College offers a broad curriculum including A Levels, T Levels and vocational qualifications, providing pathways to university, apprenticeships and employment.
Alongside academic achievement, the College places considerable emphasis on developing the qualities young people need to succeed beyond the classroom.
Its dedicated Personal and Professional Development programme, supported by personal tutors and a comprehensive pastoral provision, helps students develop confidence, independence, resilience and essential life skills.
Careers education is also an integral part of the student experience, with opportunities to explore future pathways, engage with employers and develop an understanding of the skills and qualities valued in the workplace. Through partnerships with businesses and organisations across the region, students are encouraged to connect their learning with real opportunities in higher education, apprenticeships and employment.
This combination of academic ambition, practical skills, careers education and personal development is central to the College’s commitment to preparing well rounded, capable and highly employable young people who are equipped to make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider economy.

Mike Ashton, Chair of Governors at The Henley College, said:
“I am delighted to have been appointed as a National Leader of Governance and welcome the opportunity to contribute to the continued development of further education nationally.
“Strong governance is fundamental to ensuring that colleges provide the highest quality education and opportunities for their students. At The Henley College, we are committed to combining academic excellence with the skills, confidence and personal qualities young people need to succeed in an increasingly complex and changing world.
“I look forward to sharing experience and good practice with colleagues across the sector, while continuing to support the College’s ambitions for its students and the communities we serve.”
Simon Spearman, Principal of The Henley College, said:
“We are absolutely delighted that Mike’s experience and expertise have been recognised through this national appointment. It is a tremendous achievement and one that reflects the strength of leadership and governance at The Henley College.
“Mike brings valuable insight, commitment and strategic direction to his role as Chair of Governors, and his appointment provides a further opportunity for the College to contribute to the wider development of the education sector.
“At The Henley College, our ambition extends well beyond examination results. We want every student to leave us with excellent qualifications, but also with the confidence, independence, resilience and skills to thrive in higher education, employment and life.
“Our academic and vocational programmes, strong pastoral provision, Personal and Professional Development programme and careers education all play an important role in achieving this. We are proud of the opportunities we provide and remain committed to delivering an exceptional student experience.”
Mike’s national appointment comes as The Henley College continues to strengthen its educational provision, continuing to develop employer partnerships and support the aspirations of young people across the Thames Valley.
