The partnership brings together two well established Henley organisations and will combine the College’s beautiful green grounds and tennis courts with the expertise of one of Oxfordshire’s leading community tennis clubs.
Led by Henley Tennis Club Director of Tennis, Tom Scott, the programme will give students access to high quality coaching, with opportunities for those who are new to tennis as well as more experienced and ambitious players looking to develop their game.
Enrichment is an important part of the student experience at The Henley College. Alongside their studies, students are encouraged to try new activities, pursue their interests and develop the wider skills and confidence that will help them in the future.
Tennis offers an excellent opportunity to build resilience, self discipline, confidence, goal setting, problem solving, teamwork and personal responsibility. These are skills that students can take beyond the tennis court into their studies, university, apprenticeships and future careers.
Simon Spearman, Principal of The Henley College, said:
“We are delighted to be working with Henley Tennis Club. Enrichment is an important part of the experience we want our students to have at The Henley College. It gives young people the chance to discover new interests, challenge themselves and develop skills that will benefit them well beyond their time with us.
“Sport is a great way to build confidence, resilience, teamwork and determination. We are also very fortunate to have beautiful green grounds and tennis courts here at the College, so it is fantastic to be able to make greater use of them while building an even stronger connection with our local community.”
Henley Tennis Club has a thriving junior programme, with hundreds of players taking part each week, and a strong track record of developing players from beginner through to county standard. The club has been recognised as Oxfordshire LTA Club of the Year and has built a growing reputation for player development, inclusive coaching and creating opportunities for young people to progress in the sport.
Tom Scott, Director of Tennis at Henley Tennis Club and Director of My Sports Pro, was named Oxfordshire LTA Development Coach of the Year and has extensive experience of coaching players from beginner to county and regional level.
Tom said:
“We want to create one of the leading school linked tennis performance programmes in the region. Our goal is to provide ambitious young players with access to outstanding coaching, regular competition and a clear pathway for development.
“Tennis teaches resilience, discipline, problem solving and self belief, and we are excited to give players the opportunity to develop these qualities while pursuing their sporting ambitions.”
The partnership is part of a shared commitment to creating more opportunities for young people in Henley and the surrounding area and strengthening links between the College and its local community.
For The Henley College, it also supports a wider commitment to ensuring that students leave College with more than qualifications. Through enrichment, sport and opportunities outside the classroom, students can build the confidence, skills and experiences that will help them stand out and succeed in whatever they choose to do next.
