Fujitsu ai ethics challenge

Four students from the College’s Business and Engineering departments have taken part in the prestigious Fujitsu AI Ethics Challenge, delivered through the AI Ethics Champions Programme, in a virtual session held via Microsoft Teams.

The students engaged confidently with complex and highly relevant topics including AI ethics, fairness, bias in algorithms and responsible innovation. Throughout the competition, they represented the College exceptionally well, demonstrating professionalism, teamwork and strong critical thinking skills.

The AI Ethics Champions Programme is a six-week initiative designed to inspire the next generation of responsible innovators. It gives first-year college students access to industry experts and resources, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to shape the future of technology.

As part of the programme, students explore AI foundations, machine learning, natural language processing, and the societal impact of artificial intelligence before applying their learning in the final AI Ethics Challenge.

During the Challenge stage, students work collaboratively to develop an AI solution that balances innovation, fairness and compliance. Teams then present their ideas to a panel of expert judges, competing for recognition as emerging responsible AI leaders.

Reflecting on the experience, one student said:

“Taking part in the AI Ethics Challenge helped me understand how important fairness and responsibility are when developing AI. We had to overcome a few challenges during the process and think on our feet, especially when presenting our ideas. It pushed us outside of our comfort zone, but it really helped build our confidence and teamwork skills.”

The session proved to be a fantastic opportunity for students to collaborate, apply their classroom learning in a real-world context, and strengthen their communication and presentation skills.

This achievement highlights the College’s ongoing commitment to digital innovation and strong employer engagement. By working alongside global technology leaders and participating in industry-led initiatives, students are gaining valuable future-ready skills that will help them stand out in an increasingly competitive job market.
