Sport and Exercise Science (Applied)

Assessment: There are four units in total. Functional Anatomy and Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology are externally assessed (worth 58%). The internal assessments are Specialised Fitness Training, and Coaching for Performance and Fitness (worth 42%).

COURSE OVERVIEW

If you're passionate about sport and want to understand the science behind performance, health and fitness, this two-year course is the perfect next step. Equivalent to 1 A Level, the BTEC Extended Diploma combines scientific theory with practical learning, preparing you for university or a career in the sport, health and fitness industries.


You'll explore topics including anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, nutrition, fitness testing and research methods, while developing practical skills through laboratory work, performance analysis and applied projects.
Assessment is through a combination of coursework, practical assignments and external assessments, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate both your academic knowledge and practical abilities.


This course develops valuable skills in scientific investigation, critical thinking, communication and data analysis, providing excellent progression opportunities into degrees such as Sport and Exercise Science, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Nutrition and Physical Education, as well as careers across the sport and health sectors.

COURSE STRUCTURE

WHAT IS AN APPLIED A LEVEL?

This qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level. It may be taken alongside other Applied courses and/or A Levels as part of a two-year, full-time study programme.

BEFORE YOU START

Designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.

Future careers might include PE teaching, lecturing, sports management, coaching, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, sports nutrition, sports psychology, sports journalism, sports analysis, sports therapy and strength and conditioning.

It is also excellent preparation for those wanting to progress to industry-recognised qualifications and careers in sports therapy, the fitness industry and coaching.

COMMON ROUTES FOR STUDENTS:

The qualification is aimed at learners who are looking to progress to employment in the sports sector. The majority of students will progress onto Higher Education and study degrees in Sport and Exercise Science, Physiotherapy, Sports Therapy or Sports Coaching. Other options include Advanced Apprenticeships in Personal Training, Community Sport and Health Officer, Advanced Coach in Sport and Physical Activity, amongst many more.
