Textiles
Assessment: Coursework (60%), Controlled Assessment (40%)
Duration: 2 Years
Costs: Buy an A3 sketchbook (discounted at the College). Three trips per year (£15–£22 each). Most materials are provided; some must be purchased. Please recycle and reuse where possible, and buy sustainably. Bring the basic starter kit before the course starts.
Entry Requirements: English grade 4, Maths grade 4. Plus one grade 5 and three grade 4s from your remaining subjects. Interest/passion in Art Textiles must be shown.

TRANSITION TASK:
Please collect fabrics, threads, yarns, anything you like from charity shops and jumble sales. We will send a list of equipment that you need to have later in the year.
Visit galleries, museums, parks, National Trust houses – anywhere you like! Keep a notebook and add drawings, notes and photos. Think of it like a visual diary. This will help me to understand what interests you.
COURSE OVERVIEW
TThis is a Fine Art Textiles course. You are encouraged to think and explore widely and enjoy pushing the boundaries of what you can do. Students often go on to do Art Foundation courses before specialising. We have had many successful applications to Central Saint Martins and Kingston.
COURSE STRUCTURE
Before You Start
You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.
Year 1
You will spend the first term doing workshops and learning lots of techniques, including batik, tie-dye, screen-printing, hand and machine embroidery, felting, patchwork and block printing. We will look at historical and contemporary artists. These will help you to develop your own style and, using the trips as inspiration, you will work towards and create final pieces. You will complete two units in Year 1.
Year 2
By Year 2, you should be working more independently. You will complete two projects which will be submitted to the exam board. The first is self-directed and includes a short essay. The exam board will issue a paper with starting points and titles at the start of February and you will choose one to work from, building up a body of work and completing a final piece over a fifteen-hour period.
You are also encouraged to supplement your programme with the Extended Project.
LIFE AFTER HENLEY
Careers
There are many career options for students who have skills in Textiles, including in the Fashion and Textiles industry. Possible roles include designers, buyers, innovation, clothing manufacturing engineers, screen printers and many more
Higher Education
A key course for students planning to continue on to university to study subjects including fine art textiles, textile design, fashion design, fashion marketing and costume design. Subject to tutors’ recommendations and a portfolio interview, this course guarantees the offer of a place on the College’s post A Level Foundation course in Art and Design.
ENRICHMENT
Students are required to complete at least 50 hours of enrichment per academic year whilst studying at The Henley College, learn more about Enrichment here.
