COURSE OVERVIEW

Politics will appeal to students who have a genuine interest in current affairs, combined with an ability to analyse and evaluate questions logically, using relevant supporting evidence. Students will examine the effects democracy and participation, political parties, electoral systems, voting behaviour and the media. They will explore core political ideas: conservatism, liberalism, socialism and the impact of the UK constitution, Parliament, Prime Minister and executive, and the UK Supreme Court. In year 2 students will study global politics and compare structural, cultural and rational similarities and differences between the two systems.

Course Content

Politics will appeal to students who have a genuine interest in current affairs, combined with an ability to analyse and evaluate questions logically, using relevant supporting evidence.  Students will examine the following major topics during the course:

  1. Component one
  • Democracy and participation
  • Political parties
  • Electoral systems
  • Voting behaviour and the media
  • Core Political Ideas: conservatism, liberalism, socialism
  1. Component two
  • The UK constitution
  • Parliament
  • Prime Minister and executive
  • UK Supreme Court.
  • Non-core political ideas: nationalism
  1. Component Three
  • Global politics - a comparison of structural, cultural and rational similarities and differences between the UK and global political systems

Life After Henley

Whilst the course provides an excellent preparation for the study of
subjects such as politics, international relations, law, economics and business at university, it also offers a strong academic grounding for those wishing to pursue many other subject areas at degree level.

Last year students went on to various destinations including university places at De Montfort, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Queen Mary, Bath Spa, Liverpool, Manchester, Reading, Exeter and Warwick.

Alternatively, the course equips students with a very good educational experience if they want direct entry into employment or further training.
