Classical Civilisation AS/A Level
Classical Civilisation offers the opportunity to study the literary and material culture of the Ancient Greeks and Romans. Students will study literature, such as Homer’s influential epic poem, The Odyssey. They will also examine physical remains through studying ancient art and archaeology.
The topics cover aspects of classical civilisation which have been significant in the development of the modern world. All include a study of primary classical sources, whether texts in translation or physical evidence, and all encourage candidates to gain an understanding of classical societies and their values.
Students do not need any prior knowledge of Classical Civilisation to start this course and all sources will be in English translation, but they may find it particularly interesting if they enjoy literature and history. The study of Classical Civilisation complements many other popular A Levels, including Ancient History, English Literature, Philosophy, Drama and Art.
Assessment will be entirely exam based by means of structured source-based questions and essays. There is also the opportunity to partake in field trips within the UK and to the Mediterranean.
