This qualification is ideal for those wanting a career as gym instructor, employment in the leisure industry via an apprenticeship or those wishing to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 National in Sport, Fitness and Personal Training. It has been developed in consultation with employers in the sport and active leisure industry and the professional body for sport. It has been mapped to the professional standards for a Gym Instructor.
You will develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours that are required as a gym instructor. You will cover areas such as: the ways in which people participate in sport and physical activity, jobs in the sport and activity leisure industry, personal skills and professional behaviours for working in the active leisure industry, routine maintenance and cleaning in a gym environment, exercise-related anatomy and physiology, the client consultation process and gym inductions, methods to motivate clients in a gym environment, planning and instructing gym sessions and reviewing and monitoring gym sessions. You will also cover skills in literacy and numeracy and develop transferable technical and practical skills in communication (working with colleagues, customers and clients), self-management and problem-solving skills.
The course requires the completion of four mandatory internally assessed units: Working in the Sport and Active Leisure Industry, Exercise Instructor Knowledge and Skills Development, Preparing Clients for a Gym-based Exercise Programme and Working as a Gym Instructor.

This course has been developed in consultation with employers and industry specialists. The content is up to date, engaging and fit for purpose, to ensure students have the skills, knowledge and understanding of sport, physical activity and the related industry required for the 21st century.
Centre assessed units with practical and wider project-based assessment opportunities, as well as examined units are included. Students will practically apply their skills and knowledge in preparation for further study, an apprenticeship or the workplace, whilst developing professional, personal and social skills through interaction with peers, stakeholders and clients, as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding to underpin these skills.
All units will support the transferable skills required by employers such as communication, problem solving, time management, research and analytical skills.
