This qualification is equivalent in size to one A Level. It may be taken alongside other Level 3 vocational qualifications and/or A Levels as part of a two-year, full-time study programme.
Learners taking this qualification will study four units, out of which 2 are assessed externally and 2 are assessed internally, as follows:
1. The World of Travel and Tourism (Externally assessed)
2. Global Destinations Mandatory (Externally assessed)
3. Principles of Marketing in Travel and Tourism (Internally assessed)
11. Events, Conferences and Exhibitions (Internally assessed)
The mandatory content allows learners to develop their skills, supported by underpinning knowledge, and provides the opportunity for learners to relate these to the marketing industry.

There are four units overall – two are internally assessed and two are externally assessed. External assessments are marked and awarded using the grade descriptors. The grades available are Distinction (D), Merit (M), Pass (P) and Near Pass (N). Learners must achieve a Pass or above in all mandatory units. Learners may resit an external assessment to obtain a higher grade of near pass or above. |

This qualification is designed to support learners who are interested in learning about the travel and tourism industry alongside other fields of study, with a view to progressing to a wide range of higher education courses, not necessarily in travel and tourism-related subjects.
The qualification is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate Applied subjects or A Levels.
Unit 1 The World of Travel and Tourism
This unit is marked externally.
This is 1.5 hours written examination of 75 marks, set and marked by Pearson.
This unit provides the foundation for learners to study other units in travel and tourism. They will explore the key components and scale of the industry, using data to analyse key trends and their impact.
You will gain an understanding of the scope of the industry, its terminology and its key components. Travel and tourism is a business with the customer at the forefront. Different types of organisation have different roles and offer a range of products and services to many different types of customer. You will need to understand how the organisations work together to benefit both themselves and their customers and you should be able to name examples of the key organisations in all sectors.
2 Global Destinations
This unit is an externally assessed through an assessment for 60 marks.
A task set and marked by Pearson and completed under supervised conditions. Learners are given information two weeks before a supervised assessment period in order to carry out research. The supervised assessment period is undertaken in a single session of three hours.
Learners investigate and analyse information regarding the features and appeal of global destinations, travel planning, and the factors and trends affecting the changing popularity of global destinations.
Global destinations are a key aspect of travel and tourism and their appeal is strongly influenced by factors such as their location, access and changing trends. In this unit, you will use a range of resources to investigate the location and features of global destinations and explain the features that give appeal to global destinations and support different types of tourism. You will evaluate how travel
plans/routes/itineraries meet customer needs. You will investigate consumer trends and the reasons the popularity of global destinations may change.
3 Principles of Marketing in Travel and Tourism
This unit is marked Internally.
Learners investigate the use of marketing in travel and tourism organisations and how to meet customer expectations in order to inform a promotional campaign of their own design.
In this unit, you will develop marketing skills through examining the specific aims and objectives of the marketing function and researching the needs and expectations of different customer types. You will develop your ability to communicate the findings of this research. You will use market intelligence to plan and produce a promotional campaign for a new travel and tourism product or service. You will learn about the importance of meeting customer expectations and communicating with customers effectively. You will investigate the different stages that an organisation or tourist destination goes through when marketing their products or services.
11`Events, Conferences and Exhibitions
This unit is marked Internally.
Learners will develop knowledge and skills in resource and financial planning as they gain an insight into a wide range of events, conferences and exhibitions that are relevant to the travel and tourism industry.
You will explore the diversity and scale of events, conferences and exhibitions that the travel and tourism industry is involved with. You will consider the complexity of developing large-scale and small-scale events, which may be local, national or international. You will gain an insight into the processes involved in running an event or conference and consider legal aspects, logistics and subcontracting. By developing your research, problem-solving, financial and communication skills, this unit will help you progress to higher education courses. The wide range of skills and knowledge developed in this unit will also help your career progression.
In addition to the travel and tourism sector-specific content, the requirements of the qualification will mean that learners develop transferable skills, which are highly regarded by higher education providers and employers.
The qualification will give learners transferable knowledge, understanding and broad skills such as communicating and presenting ideas. All of the content in the qualification will help prepare learners for further study.
