Sports Development Programme

The Sports Development Programme offers students who show particular potential in key sports the opportunity to develop their skills to a high level.

The sports of rugby, rowing, football, basketball, hockey and netball are available, with students being able to train and raise their fitness levels with top-class coaches, alongside their main academic programme. Training sessions are an integral part of the student’s timetable. Students should indicate interest in this programme at the application stage. This Development Programme does not interfere with other students’ opportunities to take up any of the targeted sports.

Rugby
We enjoy close links with London Wasps, Henley Hawks, Reading Abbey, Maidenhead, Wallingford and Redingensians. The Rugby Development programme together with the AASE qualification means more and more players are attracted to Henley to study and further their rugby careers.

The First Team squad ended a superb season recording 10 wins. The side reached the quarter final of the Daily Mail Vase and reached the final of the Oxfordshire Schools cup. The College entered a number of 7s tournaments and gave a good account of itself winning 3 from 4 matches at the prestigious National Schoolboys Tournament held at Rosslyn Park .

Football
The Football Development squad continues to grow, with over 30 students training twice a week with Head Coach Andy Ritchie (UEFAA licensed). Over the years a number of students have been offered trials with professional clubs and have gone on to play at a higher level.

The First Team squad had a successful season, topping their section of the U19 Oxfordshire Schools League and reaching the final of the U19 Oxfordshire Schools Cup. All first year students who completed the training course went on to achieve their FA Level 1 Coaching Award.

Basketball
The Basketball squad is run in partnership with the Reading Rockets Player Development Academy. The squad are South East Regional Champions (BCS) and Oxfordshire County Champions. The squad produced one GB U20 trialist, 4 players represented their clubs at the final 4's and all squad members completed their Level 1 Coaching Award.

Netball
We have a growing Netball Development squad, with 18 taking part in 2009. The Netball Development programme together with the All England qualification means more and more players are attracted to Henley to study and further their netball careers. Our Club and First Team Captain this year is part of the NTL squad and England U19 squad.

Rowing
We enjoy close links with Leander and Upper Thames Rowing Clubs and our rowers compete at all levels up to National.
