Photography at Henley

Photography is an ideal subject for students wishing to follow a path into Media, The Arts and Photographic areas…

At Henley we approach photography as contemporary art form. We encourage students to explore all aspects of the medium, from hand printed black & white images through to digital manipulated colour work. From pinhole cameras to the latest manipulation software students are exposed to a wide range of equipment and processes.

We have excellent facilities including a fully equipped black and white darkroom, a portrait studio where they can work with flash or hot heads to produce polished results. We also have access to a dedicated computer room where students learn to manipulate and retouch their work on Photoshop. You can also study for City & Guilds Photography modules (see Part-time Courses)

We are keen that students understand the wider context of the medium by exploring the work of famous and contemporary photographers.

We normally aspire to attend at least three exhibitions a year. For the last few years we have attended the annual Schweppes Portrait Awards at the National Gallery, and the City Bank photographic prize at the Photographers Gallery. In addition to this we run trips to see Higher Education open days. We also aim to run a practical photographic trip abroad in the February half term. These have proved to be hugely popular and successful. The students work with a professional photographer who instructs them on the daily excursions. The work is collated each day and an exhibition is staged on the final day.

A recent destination was Tossa de Mar in southern Spain (see photo below), with day trips to Gerona and Barcelona. The final exhibition was held in a local café where it was viewed by locals and other visitors. The previous year we Visited Diano Marina in Italy, with day trips to Canes, Monaco and Nice. We intend to alternate between these destinations.
