Art 3D: Ceramics A/AS Level:

This is a vibrant and diverse subject which aims to develop your 3D skills.

Throughout the course you will be experimenting with a range of techniques such as plaster mould making, clay throwing and slab building, glaze mixing and glass fusing to create your own designs.

Projects start with research using photography and sketching to generate ideas. Importance is placed on looking at other artists and makers for inspiration and reference. Visits to cutting edge international design exhibitions such as Origin and Ceramic Art London will broaden your knowledge of contemporary design and sculpture. The Library provides easy access to magazines such as Ceramic Review and Crafts as well as books about art, design, sculpture and ceramics to help you with research.

From the research you have gathered you will then make maquettes (small scale models). You are encouraged to work in as many different materials as possible to develop your personal interests. The final stage is the creation of a final piece.

The range of skills learnt on this course can be applied to a wide variety of different practises and provide entry on to courses such as sculpture, fine art, ceramics, architecture, product design, engineering and industrial design.

Throughout the AS year there are two modules:

  • coursework portfolio
  • externally set assignment

In A2 you are encouraged to develop your own interests and will complete a Personal Investigation, including a 1000-3000 word Personal Study and an externally set assignment.
