The A Level course in German centres on effective communication (both spoken and written), as well as giving students an insight into the culture and traditions of the German Speaking countries. Students studying German at The Henley College are exclusively taught by native speaker teachers and in the second year have additional time for speaking practice with the language assistant. One lesson per week will take place in the language laboratory in order to enhance listening comprehension skills, as well as allowing students to research cultural topics or current affairs issues relating to Germany (or German speaking countries).
You may be required to complete an activity before you start in order to help introduce you to the subject. Check back in the summer term for more details.
During the first year, the following broad topic areas are covered: The changing nature of family, the digital world, aspects of German-speaking society, artistic culture in the German speaking world. You will also study a contemporary German film.
In the second year, two new themes are covered: migration, integration and racism; Germany and the European Union, multiculturalism in German speaking society, aspects of political life in the German speaking world and you will study a literacy text.
All students will have the opportunity to participate in the annual visit to Berlin.
