Chemistry Competition in Oxford

Chemistry students compete in a race in Oxford.

Earlier this month a team of five students took part in the fourth UK Chemistry Race, and the first one to take place at Oxford (simultaneously with Cambridge, where it originated in the UK). The team of one 2nd year student, Dan Loumont, and four 1st years, Elodie Brough, Emma Francis, Ella Gaskin and Sophie Chandler had six chemistry-related questions to answer correctly; once this was achieved, the team got a replacement question, and continued in this manner for two hours. The team who answered the most questions in that time was the winner.

Henley’s team did well, competing against teams often made up of only 2nd year students, and they finished 15th in Oxford, and a bit below half way when compared with all of the teams in the UK. As importantly, the team returned to Henley with an understanding of some of the problems that face academic and industrial chemists, and an appreciation of the teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills required to succeed in the subject at any level.
