English Teacher Published in 'Hero and Leander and Shakespeare’s Rival Poet Sonnets'

Adrian Blamires published his article Shakespeare's 'Rival Poet'

Adrian Blamires from our English department has achieved a remarkable feat by getting his article Shakespeare's 'Rival Poet' Sonnets published in the journal Early Modern Literary Studies! Congratulations to Adrian for this impressive accomplishment. Here he is pictured with his dog Alfie.

Here's what he has to say about the article:

In this article, I’ve ventured into the contentious realm of Shakespearean biography by claiming to have uncovered a passage that helps to identify the Rival Poet and young Man of Shakespeare’s sonnets. A couple of journals rejected it as too speculative, but luckily one reader for EMLS was more receptive, stating that while there’s ‘no smoking gun’ in the evidence I supply, it all adds up to a ‘compelling’ and ‘much more than plausible’ case.

Not everyone will agree, of course! The argument is long and elaborate, but should you decide to give it a go I hope it contains enough in the way of late-Elizabethan court intrigue, poetic rivalry, and gender performativity to sustain your interest. The essay might appeal to students of English and History, and to anyone curious about the life of Shakespeare. If I’m correct in my surmises, the playwright emerges as someone far more influenced by the political factionalism of his era than has been previously understood.
