Terry McGourty spoke to Photography and Media Studies students about his job as Deputy Head of Pictures at The Sun newspaper.
Terry gave students a taste of what the pressured world of journalism is like. He spoke about how a photo is chosen for the front page, what it was like covering Queen Elizabeth II’s death, data mining and how much photographs of celebrities and politicians sell for.
Teacher of Creative Media Production and Media Studies, James Ashford, said “I’m really grateful to Terry for giving up his time to give our students a fascinating insight into the challenges faced by the producers of The Sun in keeping their website updated with content which appeals to their audience and an appreciation of how this differs from the printed newspaper. Seeing the live data from the website along with the electronic picture desk gives a sense of the scale of operation and the sophistication required to produce and maintain a national newspaper website. Terry also gave a sense of the competitive nature of journalism today. It’s really useful for students to get insights from someone working at the heart of Britain’s best-selling newspaper.”
