"Not many places have such good photography facilities"

A Level Photography student Tom tells us why he loved his course.

“The course has given me lots of freedom in my work. I have enjoyed exploring new ideas and concepts, further developing my skills as a photographer.

One of the first things I learned was how to shoot and develop film photographs in the College darkroom. This is a great skill to have because not many places have such good facilities, so learning to develop film here is a great opportunity. Recently I have been manipulating film using different techniques which is really fun and creative.

The College also has two studios with professional lighting equipment and backdrops. I love doing shoots in the studios, using digital and film photography to create interesting pieces of work.

Photography was by far my favourite subject. The easy access to facilities such as studios and the dark room, as well as the brilliant feedback given by my teachers, allowed me to express my creativity in the way that I wanted while developing my skills and techniques.

Tom was our Education Award winner for Photography this year. His teacher Lillian Newman said:

“Tom has been an outstanding photography student this year. Exploring techniques in both film and digital he has pushed boundaries of photography in order to realise his ideas, based on the theme of dreams. Every technique we suggested Tom took it on and excelled, whether it was studio portraits, darkroom work, Photoshop or colour processing he pushed everything to its limits producing excellent work. Tom is a diligent and hardworking student with a strong commitment to Photography and is studying it next year at university.”

Speaking about his award Tom said:

"I feel very proud to have achieved this reward for my photography work, and it reflects the joy and creativity I experienced studying at Henley. The college offered a greater range of subjects to choose from for A-Level, with amazing facilities and dedicated teachers.
