Natalie Haynes, classicist, writer and broadcaster has joined Professor Mary Beard in supporting The Henley College by becoming patron of their Classics and Ancient History department.
Natalie, who makes regular appearances on TV and Radio 4, in particular on her own comedy show, Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics, and who has just published her new novel, A Thousand Ships, said “when the college asked me if I would stand up for their Classics, and become their patron, I was delighted. I think it is great that Henley, a state-funded sixth form college, offers A levels in both Classics and Ancient History. It’s not easy in the state-sector these days and these subjects are often the first to go. I’m looking forward to visiting the students and parents at Henley as soon as I can”.
John Bennett, who lectures in Classics and Ancient History at the college, said “I really admire Natalie. So many people think of Classics as a dry and dusty subject, but it’s not. There are tales of high adventure, monsters and gods, and ribald humour which would not be out of place in a Carry-on film, all of which we study in modern English translations. Natalie has done the world of Classics and Ancient History a huge service with her clever and very funny comedy routines, based on famous and infamous characters from the ancient world.”
