Mason Scores a full scholarship

Mason Nicholls, former College rugby Captain, has been offered full scholarship at Nottingham Trent University, starting in September.

Mason graduates from the prestigious Wasps’ AASE youth academy this July, following his completion of the Elite Rugby programme at Henley.

In December last year, Mason made his international debut representing Scotland in the under 19s match against Wales, at the Centre of Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach.

Mason was awarded the scholarship at Nottingham Trent University as a direct result of playing for both Scotland and the Wasps academy.

“I started at The Henley College in 2018, and I studied Sports Science. I come from Southend-on-Sea so while studying I stayed with a host family in Henley.

I chose to study at Henley because of the College’s high standard of rugby coaching in the Wasps AASE, and I found the College and the town to be great places to live and study.

During my time at Henley I not only made some great friends, I was also fortunate enough to be made team captain and to play for Wasps junior academy. One of my main highlights though was being selected to play for Scotland.

It has always been my dream to play professional rugby so I am hoping to have three good years at the University of Trent, hopefully play for Scotland again and play rugby for a living either in this country or abroad.

However, I chose to study subjects that would help me with life after rugby and I could potentially go into high level coaching later on. Who knows, I might coach the Henley team one day!

My advice to people who are going into further education now is follow your dreams, but always have a backup plan just in case. ”

Alongside being part of the Rugby Elite Player Programme, Mason also studied Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. This is an excellent course for gaining the knowledge, understanding and skills valued within a wide range of sports related careers.

From September, the College are delighted to be running the Elite Rugby Programme in their new partnership with Ealing Trailfinders.
