Harry Card attended The Henley College from 2016-2018, studying A Levels in Government and Politics, Economics and English Language. Harry has recently secured a position at the House of Commons.
“I left The Henley college to study International Relations and Politics at the University of Portsmouth. I'm currently coming to the end of my 2nd year, and will soon begin a year-long placement role in the House of Commons, working as a researcher for one of the Parliamentary Select Committees.
During this role, I will be assisting members of the Committee staff by conducting research and undertaking administrative and organisational tasks in pursuance of Committee inquiries. I will be involved in the preparation of briefing material for the Committee as well as assisting in drafting reports for the Committee. I may be asked to brief the Select Committee orally myself, informing them on the findings of my research. I may also be requested to accompany members of the Committee on visits. Alongside working with members of the Select Committee I will be communicating and working with staff at the House of Parliament Scrutiny Unit, relevant Government Departments and Media Officers, amongst others. I hope to use the experience gained on this placement to begin a successful career in the Civil Service once I have graduated.
During my degree, I have also been involved in launching a successful advocacy campaign in Portsmouth, which was called Stand Up For Our Seniors (SUFOS). This campaign centred around raising awareness of mental health difficulties experienced by elderly members of society, which tends to be underreported. This was an exciting project which involved working with the Salvation Army, Age UK, Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI), and the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, who I built a good relationship with.”
