Dr Gabor Thomas Digs Deep to Inspire Students

The Associate Professor from the Archaeology department at the University of Reading speaks to A Level students.

Dr Gabor Thomas, Associate Professor from the Archaeology department at the University of Reading, visited The Henley College to talk to A Level Classical Civilisation and Ancient History students last week.

Gabor spoke about his career, the recent local projects he's been actively engaged in and the degree-level courses on offer at the University of Reading.

He told students about his current research excavations on the site of an early medieval monastery on the River Thames at Cookham, Berkshire, that is also a Field School for the Department of Archaeology. Cookham is situated within a wider collaborative initiative, The Middle Thames Archaeology Partnership, of which Gabor is a founding member and lead investigator, which aims to unlock the archaeological potential of this previously neglected stretch of the Thames.

Classics and Ancient History teacher, Alex Winch said, “It was absolutely fascinating to listen to Dr Thomas speak about his career. He gave the students an overview of the practise of archaeology, and the huge variety of specialised sub-disciplines it contains. The students were particularly keen to hear about the ways in which archaeologists are forced to deal with unexpected, strange, and seemingly illogical finds, and how they work out the significance of the artefacts that they find.”
