CEO of Zzoomm offers business advice

Business Level 3 class meet Matthew Hare OBE

Founder of full fibre broadband operator Zzoomm plc, Matthew Hare, spoke to BTEC Business Level 3 students about his past and present businesses, and what makes an entrepreneur.

Talking about the key to starting a business, Matthew advised the students to think about something in the world that does not currently work well, and then think about how it could be made better. He explained that the idea does not have to be enormous or rival the ambition of high-profile entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, it can simply be something that fixes a small day-to-day problem and is useful to people.

Matthew spoke to the students about his business history. and about forecasting, profit and loss which gave the students real world examples to tie in with the Personal Business & Finance module they’ve been studying.

Matthew has founded a range of businesses over his career, with varying degrees of success, but by describing how he kept going despite various pitfalls, the talk gave students a real understanding of the resilience needed to be an entrepreneur.

Students took the opportunity to ask Matthew questions about his work (including how much Matthew and Zzoomm are worth!) and went away with some good advice and information for their future careers in business.
