As part of the Business Extended Diploma Level 3 course students were tasked with organising and promoting an event to raise money for their chosen charity. The class was split into groups, who then worked together to set up quizzes and raffles which they then hosted via Teams or Zoom.
The events took place throughout the day with students raising hundreds of pounds for various high-profile charities, including Make a Wish, Movember, Young Minds, Brave Mind, and Cancer Research.
Jack, from Maidenhead a former student at Furze Platt School said "We were really excited to host this fun event for this amazing charity. It's been a beneficial experience in developing my skills for my future career, I'm really enjoying studying my BTEC Level 3 and look forward to where it can take me in the future"
Students used their initiative and called up businesses to ask for donations and many of the businesses contacted were very impressed by the work the students were doing which was reflected in the amazing donations of prizes for the various raffles, including 2 general admission tickets for the Henley Festival, a ring worth £125 from Anthony Paul Jewellers, a Lush gift set worth over £80 and a hair cut from mobile barbers Clipper Cuts.
One group event featured presentations from representatives from their chosen charity Movember, who gave a brilliant talk on what the charity does and how the money raised will be used to support those suffering from prostate cancer. This group has so far raised over £340 and later in the week they'll be auctioning a Manchester United Football shirt signed by Wayne Rooney and an England Rugby shirt, with all proceeds going to Movember.
Their teacher, Jayne Atkinson added "I am so incredibly proud of how our students have embraced this team activity of hosting an event from start to finish, whilst raising money for charity. They are drawing on all their newfound skills from marketing, promotion, accounting, time management and planning. It would have been easy for our students not to have run an event this year, due to the Covid restrictions. However, they were determined to raise money for charity and so have chosen to do their events virtually instead.”
A survey was circulated to everyone who attended the events to rate the students' performance which is considered for their grade for the unit.
