Former Deputy Head of the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Ravi Sidhu, gave a talk to Law and Criminology students about the role of the CPS in the criminal justice system.
The students were really engaged listening to the day-to-day realities of being a barrister and were told how no two days are ever the same. Ravi spoke about various topics including when to discontinue court cases, CCTV identification, forensic evidence, sentencing guidelines and culpability of defendants.
Ravi said “It was a pleasure to come in and inspire the next generation of lawyers seeking justice.”
Applied Law students, Tofoya and Jaya, both agreed it was helpful to hear about the different aspects of the role as well as what goes on behind the scenes.
Year two Criminology student Harvey, from Sonning Common, said “It was very inspirational to meet a barrister. Ravi was really nice; answered my questions well and gave me good advice on how to proceed after college.”
Year 2 Law student Marcus said “It was really interesting to hear first-hand about rights of detainment because we’ve just done that in our exams.”
Ajah commented “It was a really informative talk and interesting to hear an important and experienced person talk about applying the full code test in real life situations.”
Criminology student Lucy said “Ravi was inspirational and delved deep into how the system works.”
Students who wish to pursue a career as a barrister were given the opportunity to have lunch with Principal Satwant Deol and Ravi where they were able to ask lots of questions.
