Students learn more about the importance of crude oil

Senior chemist, Dave Taylor from BP provides Chemistry students an informative talk.

First year Chemistry students discovered more about the importance of crude oil In January with a special talk from Dave Taylor, a senior chemist working for BP.

Dave explained to the students how crude oil is formed, and how it is then refined and turned into useful products. As well as using petroleum as a source of fuel, Dave also discussed the importance of alternative sources, such as biofuels. The importance of different additives (such as antioxidants and viscosity modifiers) were also explained, before a discussion on non-Newtonian fluids - complete with demonstrations.
