National Citizen Service Achievement

26 Level 2 students from The Henley College in Business and Public Services were awarded National Citizen Service certificates this week in a special event.

NCS is a personal development programme for 16-17 year olds that embodies the principles of: social action, social Mixing, reflection, challenge, inspiration, increased responsibility and independence. Satwant Deol, the Principal of The Henley College commented that “I was really impressed with the attitude of the students who participated and am very proud that they did so well and reflected our college. The skills that they have learned will be invaluable in their future careers”

Each group completed a 4 day residential 2 days of skills and discovery and then completed a social action project.

Simon West from NCS said “It is the first time we have worked with The Henley College - I have to say they were an absolute pleasure to work with and an absolute credit”

As part of the social action element, the students organised a variety of events including a Christmas party for Pathways students, a bake sale, a tuck shop and a raffle to raise money for Oliver.

The students have decided to join Adam Stangroom in fundraising for Oliver who lives in his village and attends the same school as his son.  Oliver is in year 1 and is a happy, cheeky and brave little boy who loves Lego, steam trains and Thomas the Tank Engine. But Oliver was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in 2016 (at the age of 3) and after beating the disease and starting school, he devastatingly relapsed in January 2018 and his chances of survival dropped to less than 10%. Student Isobel Young spoke about her time at NCS by saying, “It was a really good experience, I learned a lot from working in a team, got to know students from across the college and really enjoyed doing the different challenges”

Congratulations to all those who got their certificates!
