Last week Public Services students attended a career talk by Chris Daines, who spoke to them about his roles, the core values of the Armed Forces along with his experiences.
A former Infantry Weapons and Anti-Tank Advisor for the Export Support Team, Chris has worked on a number of defence projects in an advisory and training role both in the UK and abroad.
Outlining the different ranks of the Armed Forces, Chris was able to relay his experience of operations in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and home postings. This included witnessing casualties but also the rewards of bringing peace to others, including his role in rebuilding a school in Bosnia whist serving in 1996.
Chris showed a range of artefacts to students, including his regimental beret and his medals awarded for effort and achievement.
Teacher Tracey Ford, who organised the event, said, “The students really enjoyed the experience. It has given them the opportunity to hear first-hand military experience and helped them to focus on their future careers.”
With an enthusiastic Q & A session at the end of the talk, Chris commented, “Everyone was very engaged in the subject and appreciative of the role that the Army serves. I was impressed with their questions and look forward to coming back again in the future.”
