Alumni student Liam Sanford has been named in the England men’s 17-man hockey playing squad. Liam aged 20, studied the Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences at The Henley College from 2012 – 2014 and played hockey as an enrichment activity. Liam played for The Henley College’s Mixed Hockey Team and they went on to compete in the British Colleges Cup in May 2014. After winning four previous games against Colchester, Brockenhurst, Farnborough and Greenhead Colleges, the team travelled to Derby to meet South Dartmoor in the final. The score at the end of the match was 3-2 to The Henley College making the College’s Mixed Hockey Team the champions! We asked Liam what his most memorable experience was whilst at The Henley College, he said: “the best moment I had was defiantly the feeling of knowing we had won the mixed hockey finals”.
After finishing his studies in July 2014 Liam moved with his family to Bath where he joined the RAF as a Flight Operations Assistant. Liam is currently based at MoD Boscombe Down but still has a strong passion of hockey. Currently playing at full-back for Team Bath, Liam was able to impress during six weeks of three-day training camps with the senior England squad at their Bisham Abbey headquarters during the October and November trials. Liam has been named alongside nine other new faces in head coach Bobby Crutchley’s England Hockey national men’s squad.
We wish Liam the very best of luck and will enjoy looking out for him at the next Olympics in Tokyo, Japan in 2020.
