A Level Geology students receive an insight into the oil industry.
Geology students were treated to a special talk by Dan Finucane, Senior Biostratigrapher at BP. Dan has 15 years working in the oil industry and gave the students an insight into the range of careers there are for geologists in oil and gas. He explained how oil is formed, trapped, capped and how, by applying geological techniques such as geophysics, lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy, it can be identified at depth and then extracted by means of drilling.
The students completed an exercise where they were asked to use their knowledge to identify potential oil reserves on a seismic profile and were shown the different products that can be refined from oil. A Q&A session with Dan was then available to the students who wanted to know more about how to access geology as a career, and the importance of their A Levels as a good starting point.
