Elections

(Nominations to be received by Monday 12th March 2012)

We are looking for eight students to join the Student Union Executive Committee.

What does the executive committee do?

Elected members of the executive committee manage the day-to-day running of the Henley College Students’ Union. This includes: -

  • promoting the general welfare of students and the life and work of the College;
  • representing the student viewpoint on a wide range of college committees, e.g. the Governing Body;
  • campaigning on issues that directly affect students.
  • administering NUS membership and affairs:
  • encouraging student social activities, clubs and societies;
  • organising social events, working for charities;

How much time will this take?
The executive committee meets for about one hour every week at lunchtime, and you will need to be able to committee additional time in order to attend Governors’ meetings, plan and supervise events, and carry out administrative tasks in order to make the Students’ Union a success.

Serving on the committee does count as an Enrichment option, and this activity will look very good on your CV or UCAS application form! However, this is not the only reason to stand. You must want to put effort in and make a difference to the college.

How do I stand for election?
Download the Nomination Form here, complete it and write your Election Statement and email it to Sue Bishop (sbis@henleycol.ac.uk) by Monday 12th March 2012. Your election statement will be put on the Student Union website and published in the student newsletter to help people to decide who to vote for.

Can I canvas people for their support?
Yes of course you can. In fact we recommend you do to increase the number of votes you get. Speak to people, urge them to vote for you, engage the help of supporters to canvas on your behalf. Make sure your electorate know who you are and why they should vote for you.

What about publicity for my campaign?
You may, at your own expense, produce publicity posters, but you must ensure that they do not infringe the College’s equal opportunities policy – in other words, no sexist nonsense or offensive material. Do not make promises which are impossible to fulfil, e.g. a licensed bar in the refectory! Do not place posters on doors or on windows, this is a Health & Safety requirement. Do not use ‘sellotape’ on walls, ‘blu-tack’ is less damaging.

Election Regulations
All members of the Henley College Student Union may vote once.  A voting slip will be issued to each voter at the voting station (Student Union Office, Deanfield).

  • Votes will be cast in sealed ballot boxes.
  • The simple majority system of voting will be deployed to determine the result.
  • Candidates must not canvas inside the voting station, and shall not post publicity material inside the voting station.

The returning officer will oversee the count and the results will be published as soon as possible thereafter.
