Absence

In order to ensure good academic progress you must attend College regularly and on time.Your attendance will be monitored by your Personal Tutor.

Absence could also directly effect any EMA payments that you may receive. For further details on EMA payments and appeal procedures please see the EMA web page.

In cases of absence the following procedures must be followed:

  • If you need to leave College during a working day, you should report to Reception at Deanfield or Rotherfield where you can register your illness and seek assistance.
  • If you are absent from from College (through illness) a parent or guardian must telephone your Faculty Administrator before 10.00am, who will then inform your Tutor.
  • In the case of prolonged absence, your parent or guardian must contact your Faculty Administrator, normally in writing. Your Personal Tutor will then be able to arrange for work to be sent home to you, if necessary.

AUTHORISED ABSENCES

Absences that can be foreseen in advance should be be reported to the Faculty Administrator as soon as possible. Absences should only be authorised in advance if the reason given for the absence is a good one. The following are examples of reasons for absence, which would be acceptable:

  • A college organised educational visit or activity.
  • A hospital or specialist medical appointment is acceptable (if supported by an appointment card or hospital letter), other medical appointmetns must be arranged outside College hours.
  • Attending a Henley College Lecture.
  • A religious holiday up to 3 days per academic year.
  • A visit to a University either to attend an open day or for an interview or a career-related interview.
  • A work experience placement which is an integral part of a course, and for which the student does not receive a wage.
  • Attendance at a funeral.
  • A job interview.
  • A driving test.
  • Severe disruption to a students' mode of transport (for example where a student commutes by rail and a rail strike means there is no practical way of getting to College).

This list is not intended to be exhaustive, and clearly the College will take account of: the inherent reasonableness of any case, the number of absences taken by any one individual, repititions of the same excuse, and whether the excuse is backed up with evidence.

The following reasons for absence would not be acceptable:

  • Holidays.
  • Part-time work, which is not part of the student's programme of study.
  • Leisure activities.
  • Birthdays or similar celebrations.
  • Babysitting younger siblings.
  • Shopping.
  • Driving lessons.

This list is not intended to be exhaustive.

If you build up a sequence of unacceptable absences the College will take action and contact your parent(s) or guardian. One consequence may be that your reference for employment or Further Education may be affected. Examination entries or awards of Certificates/Diplomas may also be prejudiced. As a final consequence you may be asked to leave.
