The College provides an excellent education as a sixth form provider for not only south Oxfordshire but across a wide area. It is the only Beacon College in three counties and its reputation has spread far and wide, enhancing the town of Henley.

One of the College’s many strengths is sport: it offers A Levels and popular diploma courses in sport, preparing young people for exciting careers in sport; these careers will be expanded by the Olympics of 2012.

The College has an unrivalled health and fitness provision for students as part of its enrichment programme and in the last OFSTED Inspection this was an area considered “outstanding”.

The College has developed significant partnerships with a number of leading clubs: in rowing with Leander and Upper Thames, in rugby with Henley and London Wasps, in basketball with Reading Rockets and in football with Wycombe Wanderers. Its students represent other clubs, county sides and even national teams.

Why is a new sports hall needed?

Locally, hundreds of young people engage in sport at all levels and a new sports hall at the College is urgently required to meet their needs.

The proposed new sports hall will be an average sized development with four badminton sized courts, some teaching spaces, changing rooms and dance and fitness rooms. It will replace an existing sports hall on the Rotherfield site which after 50 years is no longer usable. It will take about eight months to build.

Its intended location next to the College's sports fields (off Tilebarn Close) is an ideal site; there are at present no changing facilities there. It will be accessed on foot by an existing footpath from Rotherfield and there will be no increase in parking at the site except for disabled spaces, and there will be no change to the public footpath.

Sports such as badminton, football, tennis, cricket, netball, volleyball and basketball will be played in the hall with dance classes in the studio and a fitness room with weights and other equipment. The classrooms will be used for the teaching of sports courses and there will be changing and shower facilities for all sports.

Its intended location next to the College’s sports fields (off Tilebarn Close) is an ideal site especially as there are at present no changing facilities there.

It will be used mainly by College students during the day and term time but the Henley Tennis Club will continue to use the tennis courts with changing room accommodation.
