| Kate Bush |
Hi I was a student from 1994 till 1996. I studied the BND in Performing Arts. I would love to hear from any of the other students or teachers I studied with at this time. Kate Bush |
| Sue Worth |
Is there anyone who could email me a photo of the Henley Grammar school badge please. Please mail to alumni who will forward. Many thanks |
| Sue Worth (Sparrowhawk) |
I have just been reading comments and recognised a few names, I was there 1952 /1957. I remember some of the people who have written on here. Who could possibly forget Mr Clifford, Attrill, Roberts, Brind, Filkin, Hirons, Rees, Makins, together with Mrs Clayden, Miss Jenkins, Miss Timms, Miss Green, Mrs Dimwoody, Mrs Brackston (Dyer). Mr Barnes was the headmaster and not forgetting the caretaker, Tom Wheeler and Len Hayes who kept the gardens. Anyone from 1952 to 1957 I would love to hear from you. Sue Worth (Sparrowhawk) |
| Elspeth Railson |
| I attended in the sixties and would dearly love to be in touch with schoolfriends. My name is Elspeth Railson (I was in the same year as Mr Henschel's daughter, Alysoun. |
| John Barratt |
John Barratt is trying to contact a friend of his, Kenneth Lee, from his childhood, and the only information he remembers is that he went to Henley Grammar School. Kenneth would be about 71 by this stage. Does anyone have some information on his whereabouts now, and if so could they be kind enough to contact alumni@henleycol.ac.uk |
| Margit Schörghube |
My name is Margit Schörghuber and I have attended from September 2003 to December 2003 your school as an international student. I attended classes in Upper Intermediate English. My EFL Lecturer was Julie Priestely. I had a very nice time in Henley on Thames. Now I would like to contact the students of my class. Unfortunately, I have no contact information so I would be pleased to hear from any of you. Margit Schörghube |

I have not heard of 2 close colleagues from school for decades- Ted Ellis who became a teacher after National Service in 1951 and Derek Regazzoni (he later changed hie surname to Regan because he felt it was better for business). Derek soon became self employed as an adviser on anti - corrosion treatments. He moved to West London in the early 50s. The 3 of us constituted the back row of the school rugby scrun for a couple of years. Another colleague was Trevor Giles who was a talented cartoonist, however, he had to use another name for commercial work because Giles was famed in the Daily Express. He used his mother's name Halton. He went to Canada for a few years but retuned to the Henley area. Any information would be gratefully received. |

With reference to the item by Hazel Wiggin (38-42) ,she was asking after Mr Potter who went off to the War. He returned after the War in 1946 and taught Maths for a couple of years at Henley, and then left to become a lecturer at Sandhurst Military Acadamy. Most of his war years were spent in a Japanese POW Camp, so it must have been a very unpleasant episode. |
| Hilary Barnes |
Dear Henley Alumni, |
| Simon Molyneux |
Hi, |
| Hazel Wiggin |
I was at HGS 1938 to 1942, during which time we had to share our building with another school. We used the school in the mornings and they used it in the afternoons, whilst we had games etc. Later we were joined by many pupils from Kennylands Camp, an evacuated school. Another Master I recall was Mr Potter, Maths I believe. Think he went into the Navy during the War. I would love to hear what happened to them all. We were never told anything about them after they disappeared from the school. How well I remember having to go swimming in the River Thames at 9 o'clock in the morning in the Swimming Place along the Wargrave Road. It was always so cold, and I was very frightened of the water. I have a school photograph taken in June 1940, and somewhere I have a photo of the Girls Hockey Team, of which I was a member. I have only managed to contact one of my school fellows, through the Internet, but she had a stroke, and I have since lost touch. I suppose it is not surprising that I have not been able to contact any others as they, like myself, would be well into their eighties now. Best wishes Hazel Wiggin. |

Have only just found the webpage on Henley Grammar School, and was delighted to see a letter from Roy Church, he mentioned Mike Smith, Dave Horsely and Mike Head but no others. I was at HGS from 1946 - 1950 and took the School Cert - which sadly was later dropped in favour of the O levels and A levels (a much lower standard I think). Fred Warner was murdered in the Carribean shortly after leaving school, Mike Smith went to Loughborough College, Margaret Davis left the riding stable and went into nursing - I'd love to hear from her again, but I haven't had contact with anyone else for 60 years. I spent most of my life in BT in various roles, and retired in 1992 and now live in Portugal, 'away from the madding crowd'. Would like to think that everyone has been as happy and healthy as I have. |
| Roslyn Bromley |
I am a former pupil of the Henley Grammar School when my name was Roslyn Stuart and would be interested in knowing if you have contacts for any of the pupils who were in my classes 1953 to 1960, when I left to go to Nottingham University. The classes were 1 gamma, 2 rho, 3 epsilon, 4 tau and 5 omicron. I am still in touch with Jill Orsborn , Anthony Austin, Andrea Fuller and Diana Bateman who joined our classes only in the 6th years. I was head girl in 1959/60. I have lived abroad in various parts of France and Belgium and in Scotland since I left the Henley area in 1960 but have been back from time to time. I married Douglas Bromley in 1966 and we have had five children. Our first, Matthew, died of leukaemia at the age of 14 in 1983 in France but we have four remaining children called Isabel, Annabel, Alec and Eric who all live in Scotland and two grandchildren, Jackson and Andrew. My husband (a translator) and I have recently moved back to Scotland after six years back in the south of France. I look back fondly to my Grammar School days in Henley and the great teachers we had, including Mr Clifford for French, Mr Roberts for Maths, the amazing Mr Brind for Music (and the carol singing outings where we visited local households who humoured us with soup and mince pies), Mr Attril for Geography, and Mr Filkin for Latin as well as Mrs Braxton (previously Miss Dyer) for games and others who were less memorable because I was less good at their subjects! Best wishes, |
| Steve Giles |
I am trying to find out some information on past students. They were all at Henley grammar school in the 1960's.
Steve Marnier went on to do Bsc in London, Dai Lewis his father was a dentist in Henley, Liz Inwood her father was an artist and lived in Wargrave, Ian Franklin lived in Caversham. They all left in either 1966 or 67. I would be very grateful if you had any contact with these or with anyone else who might have been in that leaving class in 66/67. |
| Kathryn Fletcher (nee Clark) |
Since leaving King James College and then graduating from Bristol University (Maths) & Reading University (Meteorology) I’ve worked writing scientific modelling software in the water industry, in the radioactive waste disposal industry with consultants Intera who were based in Henley itself at the time, and , for the past 12 years, in the oil industry with Schlumberger based in Abingdon. My current role is commercialisation manager leading the team of reservoir engineers that tests the oil field modelling software application called Petrel. I’ve got 3 kids now aged 5-10 and am currently trying to finish a part-time MSc in Petroleum Engineering. |

Hello! I've just found the site of the "Henley Grammar School" and i'm very pleased ! I've been working as a french assistant in 1975 . I would be very happy to have news from the teachers and especially from Mr Ian Johnstone . Thank you and excuse my english ! |
| Sylvia Young (now Enfield) |
| I was a friend of the Clifford family from my birth to University days and longer but have lost touch with John Paul and Jane. Clem Clifford was head of the French Department for many years from probably 1945 -1960 . He was a gifted but eccentric teacher. One of the communications mentions his habit of flicking chalk at pupils. I think there may be more stories like that. The family lived in Vicarage road and both the boys Paul and John did well at University. Paul studied Chinese and I once saw him in a news item on students in Beijing. Clem and Margaret are dead but I wonder if anyone knows where their children are now. I have many memories of their trips to France with his students as related on their return! I was Sylvia Young and now live in Sydney. My father George W Young was also a student at the Grammar school. He became a journalist and died in 2001 aged 86. |
| Helen Crawford |
| Helen Crawford (class of 76) would like to bet she is the first grandmother in her year - and following in family dissenting literary tradition my granddaughter has just wrecked her first bookshop. Hope all old classmates are well and thriving, as I am xxx |
| Pauline Lord |
| I was at HGS between 1946 and 1953 and have fond memories, great education even with post-war difficulties, in a wonderful setting. Remember Audrey Arlott, Barbara Burgess, Margaret Craigie, Michael Drown and the teachers, what characters, Miss Hunter, Mr Barnes, Mrs Claydon, Elizabeth Cunningham stylish wise woman of English Lit (she chose me as the Goddess Athene in Iphigenia in Tauris), Mr Brind the inspirational music teacher, won't go on to name all of them, and quite a few others. Now live in London, missed the 400-year event, would love to join in future gatherings. |
| Audrey Eattell (now Betteridge |
| Audrey Eattell (now Betteridge) Would like to be in touch with anyone who attended between 1947 and 1954. |
| Ivy Aarons |
| I was at HGS from 1946 - 1950 and have very happy memories of those years. I can't remember which house I was in but I was on the swim team and belonged to the drama club. I learned to square dance one term and it came in handy when I emmigrated to the U.S. in1969. I don't recall the names of my classmates because we called each other by our initials. Mine were I.C. and there was an R.P. I also remember that Mr. C.C.Clifford was a dead shot with a piece of chalk in your ear if he caught you talking in his French class. I was on the receiving end several times. Happy days. |
| Susan Nicholls |
| I was at the Grammar School from 1965 until 1971 (I left a year early). I, too, missed the reunion in 2004 - have only just seen the information on your web-site. My niece is currently a student at The Henley College. |
| Nelson Swinney |
| At HGS 1934 to 1939 but doubt if many of those years are still about. If so, please get in touch. |
| Roy Church |
| I have only just found the H.C./H.G.S. site and am very sad I missed the 2004 celebrations - I just didn't know.
I was at H.G.S. during 1946/49. I would love to make contact with Mike Smith, Dave Horsley or Mike Head who were of my era. Just a few other names from the past to remember Mr H. D. Barnes, Miss Hunter, C. C. Clifford, Miss Wilkinson, Mr Roberts. I have spent most of my working life working on or designing High Power R.F. Systems for Particle Accelerators. Only as the years roll by do you realiuse how lucky you were to have such a broad based education. |

| David Smith |
I was at HGS from (I never get this quite right) about 1955 until 1961. Was a founder member of the Boat Club and rowed in the 2nd IV and then the 1st IV where I gained my colours. I went on to Art College and studied Theatre Design. Never did a lot with that but have been 'on stage' for nearly 40 years, as an amateur. Now living in West Cornwall. Have worked on and off at the Minack Theatre and have appeared there several times, usually in musicals and once in Opera, (The Magic Flute). Have fond memories of HGS and would dearly love to make contact with old friends, especially Penny Warren and Jackie Mott. My brother John Smith was also an Old Boy, 1958-1963, he sadly died ten years ago aged 47, I am sure he will be remembered by some of you. |
| Steve Gurr |
| My name is Steve Gurr, a former pupil, who left in 1972, having completed my O levels in the Fifth Form at Henley. I went on to complete a Ph.D at Salford University in Organic Chemistry and I now teach Chemistry at Mougins School in the South of France. I would be interested to learn what happened to other former pupils from my year. |
| George E Miller |
| "I was at HGS from 1947-1955 so left 3-4 years later than most of those I arrived with - staying on to try for a state scholarship. I am interested in contacting anyone at the school - especially those entering in 1947 (I think I remember I was in form 2B!) with a view to meeting during the reunion weekend? Can we start a list (other than Friends Reunited for which few have signed on?) I have just bought the Henley book and find that I am no fewer than 5 of the photographs from the HGS period. Can we start a competition?!" |
| Peter Latham |
| Was at GS 1954-61. Came to 400yr bash and enjoyed meeting Lee and Tubby Austin and David Dickie among others. But it all went very quickly and we didn't really manage a good natter, so I'd welcome further contact I went on to New College and got degrees in French and then Comparative Literature. Spent time teaching English in France before settling in Newcastle. Taught French and ran pastoral system at Newcastle College until early retirement in 1997. I've been a local councillor since, using the 'skills' I acquired as National Executive member and Chair of negotiators for NATFHE the lecturers' union. Married Judith in 1976, we have 13yr old daughter Jo. We enjoy walking, cycling, bad tennis and spending time at our house in central France. Jo and I are fully paid up members of the Toon Army, still mourning the departure of wor Bobby |
| Paul Baylis |
| I attended Henley Grammar from 1950 to 1955. I would like any information you may have on any of my old school mates. I emigrated to the US in 1961 and have lived here since that time. |
| Thomas Lane |
| I was sorry to miss the weekend reunion. My name is Thomas Lane. I was at King James' from 73 to 79. I would love to visit future events |
