How we support you
Careers and Higher Education
Your personal tutor will be able to help you with advice on such things as CVs and letters of application. You can make an individual appointment to see a Careers Adviser, who can discuss in detail your career plans and give advice and guidance. We organise some visits to University Open Days and information sessions on applying to university.
The College has a well-stocked careers library that contains printed materials and computer programmes that can help with your careers research.
Catering Services
There are refectories at both Deanfield and Rotherfield open from early morning until mid afternoon to provide a wide range of healthy food options at student prices.
College Charter
Our Charter lists our commitments to you. We aim to provide a high quality service in all that we do. When you enrol at The HENLEY College you will sign a contract. This sets out your obligations as a student and our commitments to you as a College. We have a complaints procedure if you find we do not meet our commitments.
Counselling
Your personal tutor is likely to be your first point of contact for most things but there may be times when you wish to speak with somebody else. Your tutor may suggest you talk to the College counsellor, or you may decide for yourself to make an appointment.
Financial Help
If you experience financial hardship that interferes with your studies you should seek advice from Student Services. Students may also apply to the Discretionary Learner Support Fund once they are enrolled.
Library and Student Learning Centres
The College Library has a stock of 20,000 books, over 2,000 DVDs and videos, subscribes to almost 100 journals and takes a range of daily newspapers. If you need help with finding information the Library staff will be pleased to advise you. Students have an induction to the Library at the start of the year.
There are Student Learning Centres on both sites where there is drop-in access to computer facilities, with help available from the Centre supervisors. The Centres are equipped with computers running a range of software. Scanner, laser and colour printing facilities are available. Several online databases are accessible to help you find information, for example Encyclopædia Britannica Online and InfoTrac (a newspaper and magazine database). You are encouraged to access learning material on the Internet.
Parking
No student cars are allowed on the College’s two main sites and there is a student car park for your use close to the College in Tile Barn Close. You will need a permit for this. Students are discouraged from bringing cars into Henley to protect the environment and there are bye-laws to prevent anti-social parking on neighbouring roads.
Reprographics and Stationery
There is a student shop at Deanfield which provides a comprehensive range of stationery as well as printing and binding services. There is also an art shop in the Deanfield art studios. Photocopies are available on both sites and card credits can be purchased at Reception.
Students’ Union
The Students’ Union has an important part to play in College life. As well as being involved in social and welfare activities, such as weekend and day trips, parties and charity events, the Students’ Union is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS). This means you can upgrade your membership to an NUS Extra card which entitles you to discount in numerous retail outlets, restaurants and leisure venues. The Union represents students by attending important College committee meetings, including the Governing Body, the Strategy, Students and Curriculum Committee and the Health, Safety and Safeguarding Committee, ensuring the student voice is heard. More information can be found on the Students’ Union pages.
Upgrade Study Support
The College endeavours to provide for the additional needs of all students to ensure the successful completion of programmes of study. Support is offered throughout the College to students who may have identified learning differences, or who could benefit from additional coaching. This can take place through subject specific workshops, or one-to-one, or small group tuition. The provision and use of specialised equipment may also be available for the benefit of individual learners.
For further information or to discuss your needs, please contact the Study Support Manager on 01491 634017 (direct line).
LearnZone
LearnZone is the College e-learning system through which enrolled students can access a broad range of learning resources and materials, as well as student news and information. The College website has an area for prospective students, which contains a wealth of information.
