Mathematics at Henley
Students can choose either single mathematics or, for the very able, there is opportunity to gain two separate A Levels.
Mathematics is an ideal course for those wishing to study mathematics, physics or engineering at university, but it is also an excellent subject for the study of economics, accountancy or business management.
Many students, including those who achieve an A* in Maths GCSE, find the transition from GCSE Maths to AS Level Maths difficult. This is because:
- The questions asked at AS Level require a different solution/approach to those asked at GCSE.
- The pace of teaching and learning increases significantly (the first AS exam is in January of year 1).
- Students may not have been taught all the A* GCSE Maths material.
- There is a long time gap between finishing the GCSE and starting AS Maths.
We therefore expect that students will spend some time before starting AS Maths recapping and consolidating what they have learnt at GCSE. We strongly recommend the use of the following publication, which includes explanations, examples and questions for you to practice on, to help you achieve this over the summer vacation:
‘Head Start to AS Maths’ Published by CGP (also available on Amazon) ISBN 9781841469935
Apart from the A Level courses, there is also opportunity to retake GCSE Maths (one year course) and a Maths Study Support Service for students studying different subject areas.
