Science (Applied) Forensic Science
Extended Diploma

Do you enjoy Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics? Are you interested in working in science but looking for an alternative to A Levels?  If so, then this could be the right course for you. The Extended Diploma in Applied Science is a two year science course, which can prepare you for either direct entry into science employment, eg as a laboratory technician/food scientist, or as a route onto many different  university science courses, including the traditional sciences, Biomedical/Forensic Science, Geology or Pharmacy.

This course will allow you to develop your practical science skills alongside many other transferable skills such as effective communication, working with others, using ICT, independent research and meeting deadlines. There are no examinations – your learning is continually assessed through coursework, so you will need to be very well organised and be prepared to carry out additional research and reading to extend the work covered in lessons.

Over two years you will study 6 compulsory units (fundamentals of science, working in the science industry, scientific investigation, scientific practical techniques, perceptions of science and application of numbers for science technicians) and thirteen optional units which may include: using science in the workplace, practical chemical analysis, science informatics, forensic photography, microbiological techniques, genetics, medical physics, biochemistry and forensic evidence collection techniques.

During the course you will visit state of the art laboratories in industry and benefit from expert external speakers.  There will also be the opportunity to apply for work experience in a science industry of your choice such as a hospital laboratory, science research or analysis, brewing, veterinary science or conservation.

At the end of this course, the best grades are equivalent to 3 As at A Level and would allow entry onto a diverse range of science degrees. Suitably qualified (ie meeting AL entry requirements) and very hard working students may be able to take an AS science subject alongside the diploma course.
