Design and Technology AS/A Level

An A Level in Design & Technology is an essential stepping stone to a variety of Higher Educational disciplines that require you to challenge your knowledge of Materials and Technological Processes. It combines to enhance your understanding of society and develop your ability to problem solve creating innovative designs.

The course; Product Design Resistant Materials, will give you an introduction of the design process, new technologies and materials, it is ideal for students wanting to consider careers in Architecture, Product Design, Interior Design, Furniture, Transport and Graphic Design as well as Education. As identified by the Russell Group, it compliments both scientific and non-scientific subjects.

AS

Unit 1 Portfolio of Creative Skills

Students are given the opportunity to develop and learn technical and practical skills and processes available to them thorough three sections; an investigation, design proposal and a series of manufacturing high quality products (worth 60% of the AS grade).

Unit 2 Design and Technology in Practice

During the course students will learn about the materials and technologies available to them as a Designer, including commercial practises and quality checks. The assessment is through a 1 hour 30 minute examination, worth 40% of the AS grade.

A2

Unit 3 Designing for the Future

Students will further develop their knowledge gained from the As units to include the impact designers have on society, how they can utilise materials and the advancement of technology as a Designer today.

Unit 4 Commercial Design

Students are given the opportunity to address a real design and make problem, using the skills acquired through the units they produce a folder and final quality product.

Assessment is by coursework, project work and written exam, the coursework worth 60% and exam 40% of the final grade.

Entry requirements: Minimum of 44 points and GCSE grade C in Mathematics, or Science, and English, GCSE in D&T is an advantage but not requisite. more..
