The Development of Opera - What is opera all about?

This course is intended as an introduction for those who have experienced opera in some form or another and would like to broaden their knowledge and experience. The course will be an open-ended exploration of the huge variety of stage works that comprise the art form ‘opera’, from its beginnings around 1600 up to the present day. The different phases of the development of opera will be explored, although the course will not be presented chronologically. Starting from a well-known opera, such as ‘Marriage of Figaro’ or ‘Carmen’, we will go selectively backwards and forwards in time to investigate the different styles that have developed. The social and historical context of each opera and composer will also be covered.

If possible an extra-curricular trip to see a live opera performance will be arranged.
