Hard Times by Charles Dickens

February 7th 2012 is the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens and the British Film Institute will be marking the event with a retrospective of film and TV works based on or inspired by the writer. As part of the commemorative events this half-day course, the third in a series of three, looks at Dickens’s character sketches in ‘Hard Times’ against the backdrop of Victorian England as it becomes increasingly industrialized. It asks if the plot is an oversimplified dichotomy and what relevance, if any, with its bathos and pathos the novel has for the reader of the twenty first century.

It is recommended that students read the novel before attending the course.
