Expectations Fulfilled: Charles Dickens's Great Expectations

February 7th 2012 is the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens and whilst the British Film Institute will be marking the event with a retrospective of film and TV works based on or inspired by the writer, the BBC is planning a three part adaptation of Dickens’s ‘Great Expectations’ over the 2011 Christmas period. As part of the commemorative events this half-day course (the first in a series of three planned to examine Dickens’s novels) introduces the writer, the man and his times. It considers some of the most vivid scenes of ‘Great Expectations’ and the characterization of the main protagonists. Finally it asks to what extent the closing chapters fulfil our expectations of a successful denouement.

It is recommended that students read the novel before attending the course.
