Life Drawing & Painting

10 weeks: autumn and spring terms
5 weeks: summer term

This course gives the opportunity to draw from the figure. Complete beginners are welcome as are those with more experience. You will use a range of drawing media including pencil, charcoal, ink and pastel and you will develop your skills in using line, tone and composition with the life model as subject matter. You will be introduced to different ways of looking and sharing new techniques. You will also be shown different artists’ styles of working from the figure. Basic drawing materials e.g. paper, charcoal, pastel and ink are included in the cost.

With more confidence in your life drawing skills, or even with limited prior experience, this unit will give you the opportunity to paint from the figure using the medium of your choice: oil, watercolour, gouache or acrylic*. You will learn the importance of good composition and how colour can be used expressively or naturalistically. You will be shown examples of different artists’ styles and have the opportunity to try out a range of painting techniques.

For this five week block, the model will be ‘staged’ in an interior setting, offering references to David Lynch type scenarios. The model will be keeping to a sequence of poses for the duration of the five week course and this will give the opportunity for sustained study in a medium of your choice from the same or from different positions in the room. This course would be suitable for more adventurous students with more confidence in their drawing skills.
