The Art of the Illustrated Poster (1889-1939)

Students interested in the history of art, design and printing will find this course fascinating. This subject will be explored through illustrated talks and discussion and students will be given the opportunity to examine original posters. The significance of the poster within a wider social context will be evaluated, for example when discussing the art nouveau period, architecture, interiors, ceramics and glassware will also be discussed.
We will look at works by Jules Chéret (the father of the pictorial poster), Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Alphonse Mucha, Beggarstaff Brothers, Leonetto Cappiello, A.M. Cassandre, E. McKnight Kauffer, Tom Purvis, Frank Newbould, etc.
