Law

Cancelled due to insufficient enrolments.

The AS Level in Law involves the study of the English Legal System. You will take two modules; The English Legal System and Sources of Law. The course will familiarise you with the organisation of the courts and the role of judges, magistrates, solicitors and barristers. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of topics such as the penal system and the particular considerations involved in sentencing young and adult offenders. In addition, you will explore the extent of police powers and the pros and cons of our jury system. Analysis and evaluation of the current law is essential and you will develop the necessary skills in order to allow you to do this.

The A2 Level involves an in-depth study of Criminal Law. The two modules require a study of crimes such as murder, manslaughter, assault, battery, actual and grievous bodily harm, theft, burglary and defences such as insanity, diminished responsibility, provocation and intoxication. You will study many cases, developing a critical awareness of the present state of the Criminal Law and learning how to analyse and solve problems by applying legal rules.

The specifications provide an excellent foundation for the study of Law or related courses in Higher Education. No prior knowledge of the subject is required, although it is recommended that students have good communication skills, together with a good memory for detail. There is, however, an emphasis on formal essay writing and this should be taken into account when making your application.

The cost of textbooks and exam fees are not included in the course fee.
