Philosophy at Henley

Philosophy has a unique status among the Humanities. It is an enriching pursuit in its own right and complementary discipline, that contributes to and enhances the study of other subjects, making it an ideal addition to the curriculum, even at Advanced Subsidiary level.

For instance, the study of Moral Philosophy complements any of the Sciences, Government and Politics, Law, Business Studies and Economics. The study of the nature of freedom, law and authority in Philosophy of Mind enhances the study of Psychology.

Studying the Philosophy of Science provides students of the Natural and Social Sciences with a thorough understanding of the aims and limitations of scientific enquiry.
Philosophy does more than overlap with certain subjects, however. It provides students with the tools and confidence to think about and discuss any topic in a rational and logical manner. For instance, the study of the set texts enables students to analyse & evaluate language and provides obvious benefits to students of Literature. The set themes teach students to see the strengths and weaknesses of a particular argument, thus developing a mature approach to study and a sympathetic awareness of the diversity of opinion.
