Law AS/A Level

The AS in Law involves the study of the English Legal System. You will take two modules; The English Legal System and Sources of Law. These modules will be assessed by two exams to be taken in June with the OCR examination board.

The course will familiarise you with, for example, the organisation of the courts and with the role of judges and magistrates. You will gain a knowledge and understanding of topics such as the penal system and the particular problem of the young offender, of juries and of police powers. You will develop a critical awareness of the changing nature of law in society.

A2 involves an in-depth study of Criminal Law. There is no coursework; assessment is by two exams. The two modules require a study of crimes such as murder, manslaughter, theft and burglary and defences such as insanity, diminished responsibility and intoxication. You will study many cases, developing a critical awareness of the present state of the Criminal Law and learning how to analyse and solve problems by applying legal rules.

The specifications provide an excellent foundation for the study of Law or related courses in Higher Education. No prior knowledge of the subject is required though it is recommended that students have good communication skills, together with a good memory for detail.
