Ancient History AS/A Level

Ancient History offers students the opportunity to study the work of historians from Ancient Rome and Greece such as Julius Caesar and Herodotus, the ‘father of history’ to some, or the ‘father of lies’ to others!

Greek and Roman historians operated according to a completely different agenda and require close and careful analysis. Students will acquire the critical skills needed by a serious historian through the study of a choice of topics in Greek and Roman History, ranging from the sixth century BC through to the fourth century AD. The modules available include Ancient Sparta, the Persian Wars and late Republican Rome.

No prior knowledge of Ancient History is needed to start this course and all sources will be in English translation, but students may find it particularly interesting if they have some knowledge of History or the Classical World. Other subjects which would go well with Ancient History are History, English Literature, Art and Classical Civilisation.

Assessment will be entirely exam based by means of structured source-based questions and essays. There is also the opportunity to partake in field trips within the UK and to the Mediterranean.
