Extended Diploma in Business

This course will appeal to you if you have a passion for the business world or an intent to develop your entrepreneurial skills.  It is the equivalent to three A Levels and is a very demanding course in terms of the coursework required from you. Good organisation skills and the ability to meet deadlines are of paramount importance to be successful on this course.

The Extended Diploma is an accepted qualification for entry into university and is an excellent preparation for those wanting to go into work. Students can now achieve Distinction* grades which mirror A* at A level. Past students have successfully secured places at universities such as Aston, Liverpool, Nottingham Trent and Bournemouth; others have also achieved places on training programmes with businesses such as Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and Abbey.

Over the two years you will gain a practical understanding of how businesses organise themselves. You will be studying four compulsory units and fourteen optional units; first year units include the following topics:

The Business Environment

  • Business Resources
  • Introduction to Marketing
  • Business Communication
  • Business Accounting
  • Recruitment and Selection in Business
  • Development Planning for a Career in Business
  • Human Resource Management
  • Understanding Retail

These units will develop your knowledge of how businesses market their services and products; how they recruit and develop staff to be motivated to achieve the business’s objectives. You will learn how businesses plan and organise finance and use appropriate tools to check its financial status. The course will also cover a range of other topics including how businesses respond to economic changes, team building, business law and developing promotional campaigns.

We incorporate a work placement in the first year of the course which is based around an aspect of your studies. There will also be an opportunity to take part in trips to different business organisations.

You will be assessed internally by a variety of means, case studies, assignments, role-play and in-class assessments all marked by your lecturers which are moderated by the Edexcel exam board.

On the course you will develop many skills that will help you in the work place and at university, including time management, communication and presentation skills.
