IB Music: Higher and Standard Level
Music is a varied and stimulating course available at both levels. Students will participate in some AS and/or A2 (performance & composition) classes and also receive additional independent tuition in preparation for the common Musical Perception component.
HIGHER LEVEL
Most suitable for the specialist music student, in particular strong performers who have achieved or are close to achieving a standard equivalent to Associated Board Grades 7/8, who may pursue music at university or conservatoire level.
Assessment is based on 3 compulsory parts:
SOLO PERFORMANCE, voice or instrument: one or more recitals during the course (c.20 minutes in total).
CREATING: a portfolio of 3 pieces of coursework, choosing from the options of composition; music technology composition; arranging; improvisation; and stylistic techniques.
MUSICAL PERCEPTION: examined through the study of two prescribed works, the study of musical genres and styles, and a Musical Links Investigation comparing two distinct musical cultures of the student's choice. The written paper is based on a selection of audio tracks, both from the prescribed work and unprepared extracts, provided on CD.
STANDARD LEVEL
The minimum standard required is around Associated Board Grade 5. There are 3 options at this level, each consisting of two compulsory parts.
NB the Musical Perception component is common to all Higher & Standard level options and has the same content as outlined above.
