Media Studies AS/A Level

It is now more important than ever to understand the influence the media is having on the fabric of our society. Drawing on the social sciences, humanities, cultural studies, philosophy, anthropology and economics, to name but a few, Media Studies is a field that combines both theoretical and practical studies, dealing with the ownership, construction, critical theory and wider effects of the media in general.

Using new-media and real-world examples, students will learn to undertake detailed research, plan, produce and present work, building skills in digital technologies while developing and demonstrating their creativity.

The course ensures the placing of contemporary media in an historical context and an understanding of the key media concepts of language, representation, audiences and institutions. Looking at a variety of media forms from film to print to the Internet, students will engage in discussions, debates, case studies, personal research and practical projects building on skills that can be applied to a vast array of professions.

The course consists of a coursework unit and exam at both AS and A2. Practical coursework assignments at AS include research, planning, production and evaluation of a music magazine and at A2 a teaser trailer for a new film. Written exams require a combination of textual analysis, synoptic evaluations of skill development and media construction as well as an in-depth understanding of a contemporary issue or debate.
