Art and Design: First Diploma

The diagnostic nature of the course will help you decide if you want a career in Art and Design. By the end of the year you will have a good portfolio of artwork to enable you to go onto the National Diploma (2 years) or seek employment. You will be closer to finding your true direction.

You will explore a wide range of materials, techniques and processes. The First Diploma consists of four core units; 2D and 3D Visual Communication, Contextual References, Explore and Develop Ideas, Produce an Outcome, plus two specialist units; learners can choose from Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion Design, Textiles, 3D Design, Interactive Media, Visual Arts and 3D Design Crafts.

Staff are continually available for support and guidance offering a high level skill across a wide range of areas. We continually encourage discussion to help you find direction from the work you produce with regular participation from Learning Support and Careers to help you achieve your goals.

This course helps students who are not quite ready for advanced study and also when one year is more suitable than a two year course. It will help you to achieve strong basic skills that will enable you to develop in which ever direction you choose.

There is an exhibition at the end of the year enabling you to get some professional practice. With effort and good attendance you will be able to produce exciting artwork and gain confidence in your artistic abilities.

You will be required to bring a portfolio of work to your interview.
